Large-Diameter Drilling & Vertical Boring Services
Big Bore Drilling provides large-diameter vertical drilling for construction, drainage, septic and infrastructure projects. We drill holes from 24 to 144 inches in diameter and up to 70 feet deep for applications including caissons, foundation piers, elevator shafts, drain wells, seepage pits and other projects requiring specialized drilling.
How the Drilling Process Works
Large-diameter holes are drilled in stages using tooling selected for the required diameter, depth and ground conditions. As the excavation advances, soil and other material are removed from the hole and brought to the surface, allowing drilling to continue to the specified depth.

Common Applications
- Caissons & Foundation Piers — large vertical holes for structural support and engineered foundation work.
- Elevator Shafts — deep, large-diameter excavations for elevator installations and related structural work.
- Drain Wells & Seepage Pits — vertical drilling for drainage systems designed to reach more permeable subsurface soils.
- Vertical Septic Systems — large-diameter shafts used in septic designs where vertical disposal is required.
- Other Engineered Vertical Excavations — project-specific holes requiring larger diameters or greater drilling depths.
For stormwater and site-drainage projects, large-diameter drilling can be used to construct drain wells that move collected water below the surface when site conditions and the drainage design call for this approach.
For septic projects, large-diameter drilling can be used to construct seepage pits for effluent dispersal when specified by the approved septic design. In Madera County, seepage pits are an established dispersal method in appropriate locations, while leach lines and chamber systems are used in other areas and site conditions.
What Should Be Considered Before Drilling Begins?
Drilling requirements are often established by project plans, engineered specifications or the intended application. Before mobilization, important considerations include hole diameter and depth, soil conditions, underground utilities, overhead clearance, equipment access, spoil handling and the number of holes required.
